"Three Portraits" by Kerry Turner in OMS
A new piece, "Three Portraits" by Kerry Turner, has been added to the IHS Online Music Sales.
Kerry Turner's new solo for unaccompanied horn was commissioned by the Japan Horn Soceity as a contest piece for their 2013 solo competition. Each of the three movements is a musical portrait of a different historically-significant figure: Sharabat Gula, J.S. Bach, and King Ludwig II. The performer is encouraged to search for images of each figure on the internet in order to better understand the character of each movement.
Advisory Council Members Election
The IHS Bylaws state “The three nominees receiving the largest number of votes shall be declared elected.” This year only one nomination was received. In accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order §46, the Advisory Council (AC) of the International Horn Society has declared that the nominee has been elected by acclamation (see biography below).
Two New Titles in OMS
Two new title from Sy Brandon have been added to IHS Online Music Sales.
Mozart – Rondo from Concerto No. 3, arr. for brass quintet by Sy Brandon
This is a fun and clever arrangement of the Rondo from Mozart's well-known Horn Concerto No. 3. It makes a great horn feature on any brass quintet performance.
Brandon, Sy – Suite for horn and piano
The Suite for horn and piano is an approachable and musically satisfying contemporary horn solo. It is written at the Grade 3 (high-school or early undergraduate) level. It makes a great introductory piece to contemporary horn repertoire.
Special Participant Ensembles at IHS 45
In addition to the large ensemble that will perform the Star Spangled Banner for the Memphis Redbirds baseball game at the banquet, three large participant ensembles will perform on Saturday afternoon alongside Advisory Council members, officers and special soloists.
One of the ensembles will team up with the professional horn quartet Quadre, two alphorn soloists, soprano Mary Wilson and two percussionists to present the world premiere of Robert Patterson's "The Noble Calling." This piece was commissioned by IHS 45.
Another large participant ensemble, to be conducted by Dr. Randall Faust, will perform Dr. Faust's MEMOIRS AND SOUVENIRS--A Concerto for Horn Octet and Horn Choir. An all-star octet of Advisory Council members and Contributing Artists will be soloists for this work.
The third participant ensemble will be joined by a rhythm section and the winner(s) of the jazz solo competition to play a jazz/fusion/rock/pop oriented program, conducted by Dr. Eldon Matlick of the University of Oklahoma.
Anyone interested in performing in any of the three special large ensembles should check the appropriate box on the registration form. More informaiton on the 45th International Horn Symposium can be found on the symposium website.
