To celebrate the life and achievements of Bob Paxman, who died in July and to launch the Bob Paxman Young Horn Players Trust, there will be tributes and a concert featuring some of the world’s finest horn players who have all come to pay their respects to the man who did so much for the development of the horn. The concert is to be held in the Royal Academy of Music on November 27th and will include music from the ‘London Horn Sound’. The players will include Radovan Vlatkovic, David Pyatt, Simon Rayner, Sarah Willis and Anthony Halstead. Full details of the programme and the players are available on the Paxman website at www.paxman.co.uk.

The proceeds will go towards establishing the ‘Bob Paxman Trust for Young Horn Players’ which is being set up by Bob’s family.

Scorpion in the Sand by Kerry Turner by been added to the IHS Online Music Library

This dramatic work was commissioned by Thomas Joestlein, with the help of Virgina Arnold, the Meir Rimon Commissioning Assistance Program of the IHS and the Chamber Music Society of Central Virginia. It is based on an old Arabic children´s lesson.

GOALS AND METHODS 

Goal:

To encourage students of French horn of exceptional musicality and ability to perform a considerable range of the instrument’s repertory

Methods:

1. Advertise the award* and encourage qualified entrants for this award. 
2. Procure competent judges to adjudicate the entry CDs received from all entrants and administer the processes necessary for transmission of the award to the winner.

Other Information:

History: This award honors Mrs. Elizabeth Paris, Past President of the National Federation of Music Clubs. One award is given annually in French horn to students age 19-25. (Applicants must have reached the 19^th but not the 26^th birthday by the application deadline.)

*In the event of financial shortfalls, advertised award amounts may be adjusted. Applicants would be notified of the award change.

Requirements:

• The entrant must be a student/collegiate member of the National Federation of Music Clubs through student/collegiate club affiliation or as a student/collegiate individual member. Entrant  must submit a completed application Form S/C 15-1 (see link below) to the chairman by April 1.

• The following repertory is required, with piano except for the James Butt, which can be solo, but exists also in publication with piano or orchestra: 
  • Eric Ewazen First Movement from Sonata for Horn & Piano (Southern)
  • Jos. Haydn Adagio from Concerto No. 2 in D (any edition)
  • Richard Strauss Finale from Concerto No. 1 in E-flat, Op. 11 (any edition);
  • James Butt Suite for Solo Horn (Hinrichsen)
