I have taught students from beginners to professionals and retirees, served on the faculties of 2 German music schools and 4 US universities. BM, MA and PhD. I have held master classes, given lecture/recitals on natural and valved horns.
Playing Experience
Over 50 years of professional performances in all genres and ensembles, primarily as a first chair orchestral player, a chamber musician, and as soloist on valved and natural horns.
Bio:
William Rogan earned degrees from The Mannes College of Music in New York (Bachelor of Music), Queens College, CUNY (Master of Arts) and from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany (PhD in Musicology and in English and American Literature).
Since 1969, Dr. Rogan has performed extensively as principal horn and soloist in Europe and the United States with numerous opera, theater, chamber, symphony, and radio orchestras. Dr. Rogan was a founding member of the Lituus Ensemble, the Westphalian Wagner Tuba Quartet, Stetson Brass, Veritate Winds, and Florida Chamber Virtuosi.
In a joint project with German instrument makers, Dr. Rogan designed a double valved horn based on natural instrument principles and construction techniques which has been in production since 1986. He has published in several languages including articles in the German periodical Das Orchester, in The Journal of the Historic Brass Society and in The Revised New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, he has refereed articles for publication in the HBS Journal and has edited manuscripts for publication in German and English. He has translated scholarly works into English from German and has often been called to lecture on historic performance practice. He is an internationally recognized authority on horn performance practice and history and has served as advisor-lecturer in the use and history of the natural horn.
As an educator, he has taught Horn and Music Theory at the Extension Division of The Mannes College of Music, Horn and Trumpet in Germany at the Musikschule der Stadt Hemer and the Städtische Musikschule Hamm, Music History, Symphonic Literature, Chamber Literature, and Studio Horn at Stetson University, Music Theory and Studio Horn at the Florida Institute of Technology, and Studio Horn at Bethune-Cookman University and Daytona Beach State College. He has taught students ranging from beginning children to retirees, taught and coached professionals and brass and woodwind ensembles, and has conducted chamber and symphony orchestras.
The city of Hagen, Germany conferred Dr. Rogan the honorary title Städtischer Kammermusiker. He is a member of the professional fraternity Pi Kappa Lambda and is a National Arts Associate of Sigma Alpha Iota.
He has recorded for the West German Radio, the BBC, ITV, the Marco Polo record label, and has participated in numerous commercial recording sessions in the United States.
He has performed with numerous national tours of Broadway shows, on stage in backup orchestras for renowned performers in pop, rock, and classical genres, and has participated as principal horn and soloist on national and international orchestra tours.
He has more than 50 years of experience in symphony, opera, ballet and theater orchestras, in chamber ensembles, as a soloist and as an educator.
