Question:

In the last movement of Dvorak Symphony #7, many orchestras have horns double the bassoon line before rehearsal O and again 10 ms. before the end. Is this common practice-and who initially asked for this doubling? Should the section wait for the conductor to ask for it, or is it common enough to be expected?

Thanks,
Becky

Dale Clevenger's answer:

Dear Becky,

We have been doing this "doubling" for 40 plus years. Every conductor who has ever conducted this wonderful piece usually smiles when we do it. We do it without asking. They know that the horns' added depth of sound in this place is a good tradition, therefore we do it.
