Born into a London horn-playing family - both his father, Aubrey Brain, and uncle, Alfred Jr., played professionally, as did their father, Alfred Sr. After a performance at the Edinburgh Festival on September 1, 1957 (while driving back to London), Dennis Brain was killed in a tragic car accident.
His supreme artistry inspired many composers to write new works for the Horn, including: Benjamin Britten, Paul Hindemith, Malcom Arnold, Sir Lennox Berkeley, York Bowen, G. Bryan, Peter Racine Fricker, Gordon Jacob, and Elisabeth Lutyens.
