In the opera Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss at rehearsal number 166, the first horn part contains this very difficult passage. After weeks of working on this passage, it became clear that the first measure-and-a-half could be played entirely on the F horn with all three valves depressed. When performed this way at the highest volume of sound, it is very impressive – but technically much less difficult!
