Richard Watkins featured in Dennis Brain Memorial Concert
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Dennis Brain OP. During his tragically short life, Brain became probably the most sought-after horn player in the world. His recordings of concertos by Mozart, Strauss, and others, are still regarded by many as definitive, and he inspired works by many leading composers of the day, including Benjamin Britten, Hindemith, Poulenc, and Tippett. Immensely popular with musicians and the general public alike, Britten described him as an artist with "the unique combination of superb technical command of his instrument, great musicianship, a lively and intelligent interest in music of all sorts, and a fine performing temperament, coupled with charming personality."
To celebrate the life of this remarkable musician, a concert will take place in the Wathen Hall, St Paul’s School, on Sunday 9th March 2008. The concert will be led by Richard Watkins OP, one of the most distinguished horn players in Europe and holder of the Dennis Brain Chair of Horn Playing at the Royal Academy of Music. The programme will be performed by horn players of all ages, and will include works by Britten, Dukas, and Strauss, as well a three-movement work composed for the occasion by the current music teachers at St Paul’s School, Ben Parry, Peter Gritton, and Robin Wedderburn.
Tickets are available at a price of £15 (£10 concessions)

Frau ohne Schatten DVD
May I point you to the release of "Frau ohne Schatten" (DVD regionfree) with Sawallisch conducting the Bavarian State Orchestra at
the 1992 inauguration of the Nagoya Opera House. I did not expect that we were that good, but it is reality. There is a lot of exciting horn playing. Guess, who might have played. Luana de Vol sings Empress, Mirjana Lipovsek sings the Amme, Peter Seiffert the Emperor, Alan Titus the Faerber & Jan Rootering the Geisterbote. It is a production of Ennosuke Ichikawa with wonderful costumes & superb guidance to the characters. It is a release by TDK.
